Hymn: “Come, Let Us Praise The Lord”

Prayer

O Lord our God, we thank You for the gift of summer—for its call to life outdoors, for its messages from your book of nature, for the sailing clouds and running streams, and for summer occasions of fun and recreation. We praise You for the faculties to appreciate this season and for the ability to taste the wind of your Spirit.

O God of life and abundance and variety, plant in us your love for all You have made.  Help us to cultivate in these summer days a luxuriant growth of friendship.

And just as You pour sunshine and rain into the yearning of the potent earth, we ask that You fill us with your presence this day and always.  Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Our National Anthem:  “O Canada”

Scripture Reading: Mark 10:46-52

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” 52 Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Hymn: “The Summer Days Are Come Again”

When gathered in church we have sung this hymn as a Sunday school hymn.  It was written by Samuel  Longfellow, a brother of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Samuel Longfellow was an ordained Unitarian minister. He published a book of hymns and wrote a biography of his brother—The Life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Sermon: “Journeying Mercies”

Hymn: “A Song of Peace”

The words to this hymn were written by Lloyd Stone and Georgia Harkness. Lloyd Stone wrote the first 2 stanzas when he was just 22.  Stone was a music major graduate and wrote poems and songs for the rest of his life.  Georgia Harkness wrote the third stanza to the hymn. She was a Methodist theologian, the first female theologian to teach in a seminary.

Postlude: “Rejoice, Ye Pure In Heart”
