Prelude on "O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee”

Sue Sparks

Favourite Hymns

Ernie and Lynda Cox

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home.

All is safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin.

God, our maker, does provide for our wants to be supplied;

Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.

Even so, Lord, quickly come to your final harvest home,

Gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin,

There, forever purified, in your presence to abide,

Come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest home.

Thanksgiving Choruses

1. I’ll give thanks unto the Lord for His goodness to me (repeat)

For His mercy endures forever

I’ll give thanks (clap-clap)

Give thanks unto the Lord.

2. Thank you Lord for saving my soul

Thank you Lord for making me whole

Thank you Lord for giving to me

Thy great salvation so rich and free.

3. Thank you Lord, on this day, for our many great blessings,

Thank you Lord, on this day, for our many good friendships.

Father above, may You hear our prayer, guide us on forever,

Thank you, Lord, on this day, for our blessings and friendships.

Sing To The Lord of Harvest

Sing to the Lord of harvest, sing songs of love and praise;

With joyful hearts and voices our alleluias raise.

By him the rolling seasons in fruitful order move;

Sing to the Lord of harvest a joyous song of love.

God makes the clouds rain goodness, the deserts bloom and spring,

The hills leap up in gladness, the valleys laugh and sing.

God fills them with his fullness, all things with large increase;

He crowns the year with blessing, with plenty and with peace.

Bring to this sacred altar the gifts his goodness gave,

The golden sheaves of harvest, the souls Christ died to save.

Our hearts lay down before him when at his feet we fall,

And with our lives adore him who gave his life for all.

Today’s Reading: Luke 17:11-19 (NIV)

Read by Hser Hser Moo.

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Hymn: “Now Thank We All Our God”

Sue Sparks

Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things hath done, in whom his world rejoices;

Who, from our mother’s arms, hath blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,

The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven,

The one eternal God whom earth and heaven adore;

For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Announcements

*A graveside committal service for Steve Sparks will be held at Beechwood Cemetery this coming Tuesday. Because of COVID restrictions on capacity, the event has to be limited to family members. We know that many more would like to participate in honouring Steve’s life. We have therefore committed to hosting a larger memorial service at McPhail once conditions allow for such gatherings. That being said, this Tuesday’s graveside service will be hosted via Zoom for those who would like to join by computer. The service is at 1 p.m. and the following link will take you to the feed at that time:

*Note from Ernie:

During this time of Covid we are all feeling the loss of fellowship in not being able to gather together

in our church building. The Sunday services and other occasions for gathering allow us to keep in touch

with each other and make inquiries as to how we are all doing. We keenly feel the loss of not being able to do that during this pandemic crisis.

Steve, Sue and I are glad that we can present the McPhail Weblog Service as a substitute for regular

Sunday worship in our church, even though the weblog cannot replace the richness of in person fellowship.

We trust that the weblog services are beneficial to your spiritual welfare and that they are being watched on a regular basis.

Because we miss our greeting times at the church door after the service, and our coffee time together in the lower hall, and we are now operating in a somewhat “silent space” we would love to hear from you from time to time just to know that what we are doing is helpful and valued.

*Some of our McPhail members and adherents know Alison Fawcett who is a long-time member of Fourth Avenue Baptist Church.  This past Sunday, October 4, at Ormond, near Winchester,  there was a devastating multimillion dollar fire which destroyed her son Ian’s barn, with the loss of a good number of prize Jersey and Ayshire cattle lost.  Alison has said that her son Ian will rebuild but in the meantime her son and daughter-in-law Tracy and family are without income. For those want to help, donations can be made by cheque to  Ian and Tracy Porteous, and mailed to: 402 Dillabaugh Road R.R.2,  Kemptville, ON.  K0G1J0

*We are excited to now offer an e-transfer option for McPhail offerings. If you would like to make use of this option, offerings can be sent via online banking to offerings@mcphailbaptist.ca If possible, please include your envelope number in the memo line. A special thanks to Steve Sparks and Samantha Helman for setting this up for us! For those who would prefer mailing in their offering, funds can be sent via post to: McPhail Baptist Church, 249 Bronson Ave, Ottawa, ON. K1R 6H6 We are deeply thankful for your ongoing support of this ministry!

  1. Ernie, Steve, Lynda and Sue,

    Thank you so much for this Thanksgiving Sunday service. You ask whether what you are doing is helpful and valued. Be assured, it is valued beyond measure. Sue, your wonderful organ music enables us to feel we are in the sanctuary. Lynda, your voice like an angel brings life to the hymns we know and love. Ernie and Steve, your thoughtful and supportive preaching boosts our spirits and stimulates our faltering faith especially in these troubled an uncertain times. Ernie, your sermon this morning was absolutely what many of us needed as Thanksgiving rolled around in the horrible, isolating and difficult atmosphere with which this pandemic has clouded our lives. We give thanks to you all for your ministry and for all the things with which we in Ottawa are so fortunate to have to support us. I like the proposition that being thankful for food to eat is fine, but being thankful for food to be able to give to others is even better.

  2. Thanks so much Ernie and Lynda for this wonderful Thanksgiving message, the the music to accompany it. We always joy your messages Ernie whenever we are able to make it to McPhail Baptist. We just found your blog this week, and are so glad we did. We just loved listening to the two of you singing those beautiful hymns. We hope you have a wonderful stay in Italy, and just enjoy this new baby immensely. Grandchildren are truly a gift from God. Praying that someday soon churches will be able to open safely again, and we can visit your church and listen to your great messages and the beautiful singing! The many hymns you two have put on your blog are such a blessing to us. Stay safe, stay well, and enjoy that new baby!
