Prelude: “While By My Sheep”

Arr: Mark Hayes

Sue Sparks

Carol: “Joy To The World”

Joy to the world! the Lord is come; let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare him room,

And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing,

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns; let all their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hill, and plains

Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy

Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove

The glories of his righteousness,

And wonders of his love, and wonders of his love,

And wonders, wonders of his love.

Prayer

O God, as followers of Jesus Christ your Son, we realize that we are always on a journey. We also realize that on this journey we call faith, there is no time when we can afford to stop growing in love, in strength, and in the knowledge of our Saviour and Lord. And so, this morning we worship and confess those places in which we still need to grow. Help us to let go of those things that keep Christ from coming to us. Remove from our lives, dear Lord, anything that would keep us from getting a close-up look at love, knowing that at this time of year your love in Christ has come close to us. Thank You for coming near. Amen.

Favourite Carols

Little Child, Incarnate Lord    (Rev. Gerald A. Hunt)

Little child, incarnate Lord,

Love of God to us outpoured.

God’s best promise coming true:

Born the Saviour, dear Jesu.

Refrain:

Glory, glory, Alleluia.

Poor and humble was his birth;

Homeless was he on this earth—

Borrowed stable, cattle stall,

Manger cradle, that was all.

When our purpose is unclear,

When our hearts are full of fear,

Little child, come share our pain,

Help us now be born again.

Mary’s Little Boy-Child

Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say,

Mary’s boy-child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas day.

Refrain

Hark now, hear the angels sing, new King’s born today,

And we will live for-ever-more—because of Christmas day.

While shepherds watched their flocks by night, they saw a bright new, shining star,

And heard a choir from heaven sing, the music came from afar.

Now, Joseph and his wife Mary came to Bethlehem that night,

They found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight.

(no refrain)

By and by they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn,

And in a manger, cold and dark, Mary’s little boy-child was born.

Refrain

Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say,

That we will live for-ever-more—because of Christmas day.

Announcements

An announcement from Centre 507 where our own Rob Eady is Community Support Worker and Food Manager.

Dear McPhail Memorial Baptist Church,

Today Centre 507 is a well known drop-in centre, housed at Centretown United Church.

Despite COVID-19, the Centre is safely welcoming more than 150 people a day, 6 days a week. The food, companionship and service referrals the Center offers are important resources for members of our community who are unstably housed and dealing with food insecurity.

We are pleased to announce that two long time supporters of the Centre have come forward with $18,000 in matching funds to encourage contributions from first-time donors, or new monthly donors. That means these gifts will go further, providing even more resources to the Centre and the people we serve during a very challenging time.

As a friend of Centre 507, perhaps you would be willing to help us promote this opportunity for first time gifts or first time monthly donations through CanadaHelps.

Thank you for your consideration.

Carol: “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear”

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold:

“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, from heaven’s all gracious King”:

The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world;

Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing,

And ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old,

When, with the ever-circling years, shall come the time foretold.

When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling,

And all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.

Scripture: Luke 2:8-18

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,

    and on earth peace, goodwill among people”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

Carol: “Angels We Have Heard on High”

Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply echo back their joyous strains.

Refrain:

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

See within a manger laid Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth!

Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, sing with us our Saviour’s birth.

Postlude:

“Hark The Glad Sound! The Saviour Comes!"
