McPhail Baptist Church

Note from Ernie: Thanks to our renaissance man, Rev. Steve Zink, who provided us with the opening video clip most fitting for today’s Remembrance Sunday service. Steve has made various commercials over the years, this one for the Canadian Legion.

Let There Be Peace On Earth

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me;

Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, brothers all are we.

Let me walk with my sister in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now,

With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow;

To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally,

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bids the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep:

O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain o'er which our traffic runs amain

By mountain pass or valley low wherever, Lord, thy children go,

Protect them by Thy guarding hand, from every peril on the land.

O Spirit, whom the Father sent to spread abroad the firmament:

O Wind of heaven, by Thy might save all who dare the eagle's flight,

And keep them by Thy watchful care from every peril in the air.

 O Trinity of love and power! Thy children shield in danger's hour;

From rock and tempest, fire and foe, protect them wheresoe'er they go:

Thus evermore shall rise to Thee glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

God of Grace and God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power;

Crown your ancient Church’s story, bring its bud to glorious flower.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the facing of this hour,

For the facing of this hour.

Heal your children’s warring madness, bend our pride to your control;

Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage lest we miss your kingdom’s goal,

Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore;

Let the gift of your salvation be our glory evermore.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving you whom we adore,

Serving you whom we adore.

Psalm 46

Read by Owen Bueckert

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall, he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8 Come and see what the Lord has done,the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Luke 19:41-44

Read by Logan Bueckert

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

O Canada

Owen and Logan Bueckert

Owen and Logan (with some help from parents Donna and Rob) worked all this past week to come up with today’s O Canada production including the scripture readings, and we are grateful for their efforts.

Hymn: “O God, Our Help In Ages Past”

Sue Sparks

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!

A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its years away,

They fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Announcements

*A special thanks on this Remembrance Sunday to Owen and Logan Bueckert for their wonderful presentation of O Canada, and their scripture readings.  And a special shoutout to Owen for the arrangement of the strings and extra saxophone harmony.

*Our thanks to Lieutenant-Colonel Bob Maxwell, (ret’d) for his presentation of In Flanders Fields.

*Note from Ernie: To the good people of McPhail Baptist. For the past 4 years you have heard me make reference from time to time in my sermons to Donald Trump.  I noted what I took to be sympathetic smiles and chuckles my remarks engendered. Thinking of what Richard Nixon said when he lost the California Governor’s race in 1962, that “You won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore”, you won’t have to hear any more Donald Trump references in my sermons.  And to yesterday’s election event, I say, “God Bless America.”

*We are excited to now offer an e-transfer option for McPhail offerings. If you would like to make use of this option, offerings can be sent via online banking to offerings@mcphailbaptist.ca If possible, please include your envelope number in the memo line. For those who would prefer mailing in their offering, funds can be sent via post to: McPhail Baptist Church, 249 Bronson Ave, Ottawa, ON. K1R 6H6 We are deeply thankful for your ongoing support of this ministry!
