Come, Christians, Join To Sing

Come, Christians, join to sing, Alleluia! Amen!

Loud praise to Christ our King: Alleluia! Amen!

Let all, with heart and voice, before His throne rejoice;

Praise is His gracious choice: Alleluia! Amen!

Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen!

Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen!

He is our Guide and Friend, to us He’ll condescend;

His love shall never end; Alleluia! Amen!

Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen!

Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen!

On heaven’s blissful shore His goodness we’ll adore,

Singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!”

The Church is Wherever God’s People

The church is wherever God’s people are praising,

Singing God’s goodness for joy on this day.

The church is wherever disciples of Jesus

Remember His story and walk in His way.

The church is wherever God’s people are helping,

Caring for neighbours in sickness and need.

The church is wherever God’s people are sharing

The Words of the Bible in gift and in deed.

He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought

He leadeth me, O blessed thought!

O words with heavenly comfort fraught!

What-e’er I do, wher-e’er I be,

Still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain:

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand he leadeth me:

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom,

Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom.

By waters calm, o’er troubled sea,

Still ‘tis His hand that leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,

When by Thy grace, the victory’s won,

E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,

Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Genesis 12:1-7 (NRSV)

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Hymn: "Blessed Assurance"

Sue Sparks

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!

O what a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Saviour, all the day long;

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Saviour, all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

Angels descending, bring from above

Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest,

I in my Saviour am happy and blest,

Watching and waiting, looking above,

Filled with his goodness, lost in his love.

Announcements

*Congratulations and best wishes go out to Estella Laing who will be celebrating her 95th birthday on Thursday, August 27. What a milestone this is, and we’re only too sorry that we are not able to fete Estella at our church where we could offer our congratulations in person and demonstrate our love for Estella.  However, we’re going to do the next best thing which is a planned “Birthday Drive-By” on Thursday August 27th at 3 p.m. to convey to Estella our love and good wishes, and sing Happy Birthday. The address is 730 Chapel Crescent in Sandy Hill, right off Mann avenue. If you’re able to join us, please feel free to do so. And please keep this on the Q. T. as Estella doesn’t know about it.

*We are grateful for the news that Mia aye Pata, sister to Shee Pala is home from the hospital after a long struggle with an auto immune disorder. Mia is very grateful for the cards, greetings and prayers offered during her illness.

*No doubt you have heard of the recent devastating explosion in Lebanon. Our McPhail Partners In Mission are Elie and Mireille Haddad. Elie is head of the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary (ABTS) in Lebanon. The Haddads have opened their doors to welcome people who have lost their homes and they're helping with clean-up and food distribution for workers who are deployed to the explosion site.

The deacons would like to send a financial gift from McPhail’s benevolent fund to aid the Haddad's ministry of care in this time of suffering and rebuilding. If any of you would like to make a personal donation, please earmark any money sent (“PIM - The Haddads”) and we will ensure your gift joins the amount sent from the benevolent fund.

*We are excited to now offer an e-transfer option for McPhail offerings. If you would like to make use of this option, offerings can be sent via online banking to offerings@mcphailbaptist.ca If possible, please include your envelope number in the memo line. A special thanks to Steve Sparks and Samantha Helman for setting this up for us! For those who would prefer mailing in their offering, funds can be sent via post to: McPhail Baptist Church, 249 Bronson Ave, Ottawa, ON. K1R 6H6 We are deeply thankful for your ongoing support of this ministry!

  1. Thanks Steve, Ernie, Sue, Lynda and Terri-Anne - a great worship experience.
    How your thoughts today Steve put the 'practicing faith' lesson from last week into focus!
    Barbra Streisand sings a song called 'One Faith', which has always challenged me to think in a more inclusive way about the greater faith community.
    'Down From His Glory' - I was blessed by you three!
