A Prayer of Confession

Lord, we remember your words from scripture that ask of us: “Why do you look at the speck on your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?”

Forgive us, Lord, if what we call “sins” in others we call “mistakes” in ourselves; if we have emphasized the letter of the law, but have neglected its spirit; if our religion has been more form than substance; if while defending doctrines we have neglected love.

Forgive us, good Lord, and in receiving your forgiveness, we will also remember the words of scripture that say: “Our God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” Amen.
